This article explores how OpenShift Virtualization can emulate the capabilities of VMware's Raw Device Mapping (RDM) volumes, allowing direct connections to LUNs in SAN arrays for improved disk performance. It outlines the requirements for applications using RDMs and describes three migration strategies for virtual machines (VMs) configured to use RDMs. The RDM-like experience is achievable through the use of CSI drivers from SAN vendors, enabling shared volumes and on-the-wire I/O performance, while detailing how to configure and manage these volumes effectively.
