As someone who runs my own servers, I spend a lot of time looking over various log files. In particular, I look for things that stand out as attack indicators. These attributes are usually easy to identify, allowing me to add them to my automated blocking rules. One of the things I noticed is that my mail server really doesn't see the same volume of malicious connections that my web servers receive.
