The author of the software Franz has decided to open source it after approximately four years, due to declining sales of commercial licenses totaling around $5.5k. They reflect on the experience, mentioning lessons learned about Kafka and contributions made to the open-source Racket ecosystem. The project will now be available for free under a 3-clause BSD license and is hosted on GitHub.
